Why choose wood

A sustainable and timeless beauty

Wood has been used for internal and external joinery for centuries and for a very good reason. It is a natural, highly versatile material and suitable for a wide range of applications - from flooring to furniture - combining functionality, beauty and sustainability.

With plastic trying to take over the world, it is more important than ever to reach back to natural building materials.

A climate friendly solution

Did you know that wooden doors and windows can be carbon neutral or even carbon negative?

Because carbon is the by-product of photosynthesis, trees are composed of millions of carbon molecules. In fact, about 50% of a tree’s dry weight is carbon! While the tree lives and breathes it sequesters carbon from the atmosphere then stores it throughout its whole life right up until it decomposes.

Even when the tree is harvested and used up for making items, the carbon stays locked in these products. This fascinating substance is also the only naturally renewable mainstream building material (not counting straw, hemp, cork and bamboo).

According to the British Woodworking Federation each tonne of timber used instead of other carbon-intensive building materials (like steel, or brick and concrete block) can save around a tonne of carbon dioxide.

In sustainably managed forests more trees are planted than harvested. These new seedlings very quickly start absorbing carbon dioxide too, leading to even more carbon being stored. Using timber from these sources is the best practice, and on a personal level, something that is very important to us.

A long lasting choice

With proper care and maintenance wooden doors and windows can last 50 years or even more! What’s even better is that they can be repaired and repainted over and over again, looking as good as new for decades to come.Well-made solid wood furniture such as pieces with solid joints and quality finishes can last for hundreds of years, becoming heirlooms that are passed down through generations.

Fun fact: in 1922 a British archaeologist called Howard Carter discovered a more-than-3000-years old gold-covered wooden throne that belonged to Tutankhamun! As we can see, the sustainability and longevity of wooden products make them an excellent choice for all sorts of applications throughout your home.

Embracing wooden products is not just simply a nod to craftsmanship, it is also a commitment to a healthier, happier planet and a more sustainable future!

Many many thanks to Mihalix for a fabulous job as they rebuilt our garage and greenhouse, plus the addition of a new garden gate. We couldn't be more pleased with the workmanship and we can face the winter with confidence.
